Grandma's Bapsang: Reviews & Ratings

My Korean parents are picky when it comes to food, and nowhere does that show up than with their own cuisine. So when they give their mark of approval to a Korean restaurant, I know it must be good. The name of the restaurant - Halmae Bapsang - translates to Grandma's Food Table, and that's quite literally what you should expect here. The owner is a sweet and fiercely joyful elderly woman who visits each table, sometimes to bring you your order or to wish you a happy meal. Our family ordered from all over the menu, and everything was markedly fresh. The cold noodles - whether in a broth or the spicy mixed version - are refreshing and chewy, while the kalguksu (or hot noodles) are filling and comforting. My mom is a particularly big fan of their dumpling soup, and I had the privilege of watching one of the chefs hand-making a new batch of dumplings. They are packed tight with filling and delicious. My own go-to order of hot stone bibimbap was spectacular (to note: they also have regular bowls of bibimbap for a few dollars cheaper). It's served with a squeeze bottle of gochujang so you can make it to your own spice level, and served with a bowl of rich ox bone soup. I tend to judge a restaurant's bibimbap by how crunchy the bottom layer of rice can get in the hot stone bowl, and the socarrat achieved here is tremendously charred and crunchy, adding the most amazing texture in this mixed rice dish. Orders are delivered to the table, but clean-up and retrieving or refilling water glasses are left up to the customers. This serves as a plus for two reasons - one, you don't have to wait on anyone for dining needs, and two, tip is optional. In fact, when my sister attempted to leave a customary 20% tip, the owner waved her away saying, "No, no, that's too much!" There are just a few tables and chairs, and a pretty small parking lot adjacent to the restaurant (as well as limited paid street parking right out front). Vibes here are small, simple, and cozy - just the way you'd expect it to be at grandma's place.

We ordered ahead in case we couldn’t find parking, food was ready in less than 15 minutes! We got the ttebokki and the scallion seafood pancake. There was easy parking so we got our food and sat down just to try it while hot. The employees were SO kind, and noticed we didn’t have napkins, and brought them over. As we were leaving, we saw them making the dumpling filling and forming a dumplings! Such a cute place to go. Very clean, quiet, and spacious.

Never been to the Fort Lee area, but a few of us stopped by for lunch after our friend recommended this place! Flavors are on the milder side, but definitely taste like grandma would make them. I got the spicy beef noodle soup since I’m a killer for handmade noodles, I appreciated the beef flavors and spice flavors were more subtle, so you could really taste the broth, noodles perfectly chewy. My friend got the meat dumpling stew which is good if you just want something hearty and light that feels like home. Also, I LOVE that there is an entire pot of kimchi included with your meal - their kimchi was my favorite I’ve eaten for a long time :) Will be back if I’m in the area again!

The Grandma/owner here is super nice! I always support local papa and mama store, this one is not exception, it’s home style and hand made, and I trust the ingredients is safe. Some people who likes heavy and spicy salt type of Korean food, might find it is way to light, but that’s the home style cook, healthier and warmth. But some dish’s portion are indeed a bit small, that’s what happens in a lot of Korean restaurants, I think due to the cost of recent inflation of goods. Lastly, it’s semi-self service, so go to the screen to order, and grab your water yourself. The good part is tipping is optional

This is not a regular restaurant. It felt like you go back home and have a nice meal with your family. Grandma was sooooo nice and welcome. Her homemade food is just right. Big bowl of fresh kimchi. (Not a small side that we usually got from other places). Good price point for the quality and the amount we got. Can't get enough of this. Lots of meter parking in front.

Love the YumDrum Trio for $11.99, and the 5% cash discount is a nice bonus. Great spot for dine-in or quick takeout. I’ll definitely be back.

The food was genuinely good. It is very hard to find the parking spot even though a big parking lot is just located next to the restaurant. It doesn't allow the customer of the restaurant.
